Studios often run several productions at once, each on a different software stack. Shows already underway need a locked environment, while new shows want the latest DCC applications, libraries, and VFX Reference Platform. A Linux upgrade used to mean a long migration, duplicate machines, and a delay before the studio could adopt the new platform.

Netflix Animation Studios combines Apptainer containers with Rez. A versioned container supplies the operating system and low-level libraries for one VFX Reference Platform year. Rez still manages in-house software, plugins, and production configuration. Launching an application selects the right container automatically, and artists keep the same commands.

The move from the 2021 platform to 2023 could not run on the existing operating system, and recompiling the studio’s packages was estimated at more than six months before the first artist machine could be reimaged. Productions moved onto the new hosts immediately while existing shows kept their validated stack. The system is still used every day, and 95% of studio workflows, interactive and on the farm, run inside these hybrid environments.

Moving visualization to Unreal Engine let artists see their changes instantly, and the improved rendering helped directors make decisions faster.

Sony Pictures Imageworks built a pipeline that bridges Maya and Unreal, using USD as the interchange. Python, C++, and Blueprints handle asset management, animation, and rendering in a way that stayed familiar to visualization artists.

The pipeline was created for KPOP Demon Hunters. It is now the primary visualization pipeline for full CG productions at Imageworks, and the studio continues to improve it.

Generative video models output 8-bit sRGB, which is a dead end in a VFX pipeline: there is no headroom for exposure, grading, or compositing.

LumiVid converts that output into scene-linear float16 EXR with a high dynamic range, so diffusion footage can sit alongside plates and CG. The same pipeline lifts existing SDR material, including archive footage and phone captures, into HDR-ready deliverables. It maps scene-linear radiance through a cinema log curve and adapts a pretrained model with a small LoRA, rather than training a new HDR model.

The EXRs drop into Resolve and Nuke for re-exposure and color. Phone video can be lifted into a wider range, and legacy SDR footage can be remastered for HDR displays.

Nitro, the studio’s unified real-time pipeline, provides immediate, visually representative feedback directly within artists’ DCC applications, creating a seamless creative experience throughout the filmmaking process. By removing the delay between creative intent and visual feedback, Nitro keeps artists focused on the creative process.

Since its first production use on Wreck-It Ralph in 2012, Nitro has evolved alongside the studio’s filmmaking ambitions. It helped scale the massive procedural environments of Big Hero 6, enabled real-time fur visualization for Zootopia, supported large-scale environments and crowds in Moana, and advanced volumetric effects and cinematography workflows on films such as Frozen 2, Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto, and Wish.

Today, Nitro is a core part of the studio’s production pipeline, powering real-time workflows across animation, layout, lighting, effects, and crowds. Most recently on Zootopia 2, Nitro introduced real-time lens distortion visualization, enabling artists to evaluate complex lens effects while staying focused on creativity and storytelling.

Building on the stylized rendering work introduced for Wish, Nitro continues to expand its support for non-photorealistic workflows, including a stylized 2D animation-inspired viewport renderer and variable-rate animation playback. These capabilities are now helping artists explore and refine the visual style of the upcoming short Lilo & Scratch.

Offline path-traced rendering took a large farm and about 35 to 60 minutes a frame. Lighting, compositing, and look development stayed cut off from early production, so late creative changes were expensive.

Dwarf Animation Studio moved previs, layout, lighting, compositing, and rendering into Unreal Engine. Artists see about 95% of the final image live, at about 20 frames per second under full lighting. Final 2K frames average under 3 seconds.

Twisted, an 80-minute feature directed by Lino DiSalvo, was delivered on a 16-month schedule and a much smaller infrastructure budget. The farm went from more than 200 offline nodes to fewer than 10 GPU nodes, and departments work in one viewport instead of handing files off.
